ABOUT SISTER ZEPH – The Woman Behind the Mission

A Journey Born from Courage

Sister Zeph’s journey began where hope was scarce but courage was limitless. She left school in the 7th standard and started a free school in the courtyard of her home. To keep it running, she worked as a child laborer—so other children wouldn’t have to.
Through self-study, she earned two Master’s degrees and dedicated the next 17 years of her life to working up to 20 hours a day, educating thousands of underprivileged children and empowering women in rural Punjab, Pakistan—free of charge. Despite rejection, humiliation, and immense hardship, she never gave up.
Her resilience took her from a courtyard classroom to the global stage. She is the first Pakistani and 8th person worldwide to win the Global Teacher Prize, and the first Pakistani recipient of the Lynn Symons Global Prize for Women’s Empowerment.

Who Is Sister Zeph?

Sister Zeph is a globally recognized educator, humanitarian, and change-maker who turned personal pain into a lifelong mission to educate, empower, and protect the most marginalized communities.

Born into poverty and forced to leave school due to discrimination, she refused to accept silence or surrender. With no resources, no formal teacher training, and only seven years of schooling at the time, she started a free school in her courtyard in 1997 — teaching children who had nowhere else to go.

That single act of courage became a movement. A Journey Rooted in Courage Despite threats, displacement, poverty, and systemic injustice, Sister Zeph rebuilt her work again and again. As a self-taught learner, she later earned two Master’s degrees (History and Political Science) from the University of the Punjab as a private candidate — proving that education is not limited by institutions, but driven by determination.

Her work grew into the Zephaniah Women Education & Empowerment Foundation (ZWEE), providing free education, vocational skills, leadership training, and dignity to women and children who were once invisible.
